How to obtain a NIE in Spain?
NIE stands for "Número de Identificación Extranjero" (Foreign Identification Number). This document allows you to carry out any type of legal or bureaucratic procedure like your DNI, according to Spanish regulations. The NIE allows you to carry out the same procedures as any Spaniard with a DNI. Formalities such as buying a car, creating a commercial company in Spanish territory or, as in our case, buying a house. Your NIE consists of a letter (X, Y or Z) followed by 7 numbers and a last letter of the alphabet. You need the following documents:
- The official NIE application form.
- Identity card (if you are from the European Union) or original passport from your country of origin and a full copy of your regular passport.
- A passport photo.
- A document explaining why you are applying for the EIN.
- A document proving your residence in Spain.
Depending on the length of your stay in Spain and your country of origin, you may need to provide additional information, especially if you are from an EU or non-EU country. You can obtain this information and the necessary documents from the provincial immigration office. Just check to see what services are available in your area. You can also obtain this information from the delegations and subdelegations received by the Spanish government in the Spanish provinces. Applying for the NIE from abroad You should know that you can also obtain the NIE from Spanish embassies and consulates in Spain. If you apply from abroad, you may not yet know where you live in Spain, which makes the process more difficult.
